Baroness Emmuska {Emma} Orczy

1865 – 1947

Emma Orczy was educated in Brussels and Paris, then studied art in London with some of her work being exhibited in the Royal Academy. She became famous with the publication of The Scarlet Pimpernel, a swashbuckling adventure series set during the French Revolution, wherein the mission of the elusive hero Sir Percy Blakeney was to smuggle French aristocrats out of France.

There have been numerous film and television adaptations of The Scarlet Pimpernel between 1917 and 2000.
